He knew it had begun when the smell of death had filled the air, followed by soldiers’ screams… Still in the trench, he felt his heart race and struggled to remain upright. The deafening sound of shots firing rapidly kept him paralyzed. Shaking, he forced himself to slowly open his eyes. All around him: chaos! The frosty rain falling hard all around him came down like thousands of razor-sharp needles, piercing into his skin. 


Finally, using every ounce of courage in him, he grabbed onto the cold ladder. Heaving himself up quickly, his new surroundings told him his suspicions were true. Scattered across the ground, hundreds of bodies lay lifeless; the land was covered in a thick layer of blood. The smoke in the air burned his nose and he tried to stay focused on what he had to do. Breathing in and out, he took one step. Then another. And he ran.
